A Future Free From Plastic with gNappies

A few weeks ago, I received a little surprise in the post. I wasn't expecting anything and I was a bit baffled when I opened it if I'm honest!

I've written before about my love for cloth nappies (Changing to Cloth Nappies & gNappies gPants) and this little package also came from gNappies...in the form of a message in a bottle!

The aim of the message was to inform me of gNappies new scheme. They have teamed up with environmental group 5 Gyres to help eliminate plastic pollution.

Here are a few statistics for you all (some of which shocked me!):

  • 50% of plastics produced are for single use
  • 60,000 plastic bags are consumed in the world every second
  • 90% of waste entering our oceans is plastic
  • 7 out of 10 items that are picked up on world's beaches are plastic
  • 50 billion plastic drink bottles are used every year
  • Around 37,000 tons of plastic are in our ocean gyres
Polypropylene and polythylene are the two most common plastics that are found in our oceans and most disposable nappies that are on the market contain these plastics. gNappies disposable inserts don't.

gNappies and 5 Gyres are collaborating in order to encourage parents to eliminate unnecessary, single-use plastic from their homes. We, as a family, have gotten rid of our what seems like 50,000 plastic bags in our kitchen cupboard and are now using canvas ones.

gNappies have also launched the Great White Shark gPants and Clean Water T-shirt and with every design sold, 5 Gyres will sponsored to clean up a foot of beach.

So what are you waiting for? Go eliminate some of the unnecessary plastic from your home!

gNappies is committed to creating a world where conventional nappies no longer exist. In 2005 gNappies introduced the disposable nappy inserts that can be composted. The inserts tuck inside gorgeous looking, thoughtfully-designed nappy covers that have helped make gNappies one of the most respected baby brands on the market.

About gNappies:
gNappies is out to eradicate conventional disposable nappies from the planet. Over 20 billion are thrown away annually, making them one of the largest contributors to landfills. There is no evidence that conventional disposable nappies ever biodegrade. gNappies disposable inserts break down in a home compost (wet ones only) within 3 months and produce good compost.

(Disclaimer: This is a press release for gNappies. I did not receive financial reward for posting this release. I did, however, receive a gPant to say thank you.)

Changing Time for the 2013 Baby Boom

Recent figures reveal 20,000 more babies are expected to be born in the UK this year and each baby will use 6000 disposable nappies in their infancy. Each disposable nappy takes around 500 years to biodegrade.

It was only in the 1960’s that these plastic filled disposable nappies first started being mass produced, but 8 million are used every day in the UK alone. gNappies see a different way for the future. choosing gNappies gives you the option to create a better future for our planet and the very best for your baby.

To celebrate a gorgeous alternative gNappies has shot a baby catwalk:

"We're in a great position to make disposable nappies just a bad memory. We want parents to come together to make history and change the way we change nappies. gNappies is definitely becoming a trend with new mums wanting the best possible options for their babies  – we’ve seen more than 50% yoy growth on our websales.”
Louise Kjellerup Roper, gNappies Europe or EuroMummy

gNappies gPants Review

Last Wednesday, I posted about gNappies first gVideo! (If you missed it, you can see it here). They also very kindly sent us 2 gPants (size M), 2 microfibre reusable inserts and 15 disposable inserts.

As I've posted before, we are only just transitioning from disposable nappies to cloth nappies. I'd always wanted to use cloth from the get go but I never gave them enough thought and I assumed it would be too much hassle with C being my first baby. Now he is 10 months old and I feel as though I'm a pro at being a mummy so I went for it!

Before now, I'd only ever tried one size fits all cloth nappies with poppers. I'll be honest, they're a little bit scary so I was quite happy to see that gNappies had Velcro fasteners. Popper nappies are also pocketed so I was surprised that you only had to tuck in the liner as I'd never seen these before (see photo below).

In my eyes, this makes them so much simpler. I don't need to change the nappy at every change, just the liner. The Velcro has also made my life easier as I'm not constantly thinking, "Ooh, I wonder if I've buttoned that up right? What if he leaks?" They make the transition so much smoother.

I'll be honest and say that with the popper nappies, I've had some leaks (probably due to fastening) but we haven't had a single problem with the gPants (neither with a disposable liner nor microfibre - even during the night!) and I use one liner for 2-3 hours.

They are very compact and easily fit underneath C's clothes. He hasn't had any rashes with them and seems very comfortable. I actually get sad when I need to wash them and he has to wear a different nappy. gPants are my new love and I really don't want him to wear any other nappy! (Might have to buy all the ones that gNappies have on sale!)

If you're looking into changing to cloth nappies, I really cannot recommend gNappies enough. I'm really having trouble thinking of any negatives. They are totally worth the money. Even my partner thinks they're great and he's not a fan of cloth! As I mentioned before, they're great for transitioning. You won't regret it!

You can find gNappies at their website, Facebook and Twitter.
These cloth nappies retail at £14.95 each.

(Disclaimer: I received these items free of charge in exchange for an open and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)

Introducing gNappies first gVideo!

Changing the way the world changes nappies.
Celebrate gNappies first gVideo and make the change.

Conventional nappies take 500 years to break down.
Wet gNappies are completely compostable/biodegradable
within 150 days. With each baby needing an average of 6,000 changes, choosing gNappies gives you the option to create a different future for our planet.

gNappies invited gMums from all over the UK for a gTea at Orleans Park Gallery Gardens by the Thames.  Videoing for posterity, the first gVideo was born. Watch and share the video here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2H_q3UroKc&feature=youtu.be

“An amazing product in its own right, gNappies deliver everything that's great in a conventional nappy, but has improved it to deliver environmental credentials with a 100% biodegradable, compostable*, disposable insert, combined with a breathable covering that's better for your baby's skin.  I feel very privileged to be part of the worldwide team that's changing the way the world thinks about nappies." Louise Kjellerup Roper, gNappies European Managing Director.

It is this belief and the cold facts about conventional nappies that drove husband and wife duo and gNappies co-founders, Kim and Jason Graham-Nye to find a better way. “We both imagined our unborn child all grown up and asking us “What were you thinking?!.”  After intensive research and hard work behind disposable nappies, gNappies was then born.

In the behind scenes of the video seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuQLK5YBys8&feature=youtu.be, gNappies introduce the new limited edition gRegal gPants.  The plush purple velour embroidered nappy has a delicate gold crown atop of the signature “g”, adding a hint of royalty to welcome any newborn into the world.  It's wonderful to have a reason to celebrate another, rather special, new birth.  Notably, HRH Prince Charles is a tremendous pioneer of doing all that he can to avoid leaving a "dysfunctional world" to the next generation.

www.gNappies.com gNappies gPants start from £14.95 and the limited edition gRegal gPants are £22.95
so be part of the future and help gNappies celebrate by sharing these adorable videos.

*wet gNappies inserts are 100% biodegradable in home compost as per independent tests or ask councils to use their facilities.
