A staple for your First Aid Kit - Vidisan Eye Drops (+ giveaway!)

What's in your first aid kit? Back when I was little, my parents' kit was filled with bandages, plasters, scissors, gauze, TCP and goodness knows what else! They were prepared for any eventuality. TCP alongside iodine, eye drops and daily doses of cod liver oil are items that would traditionally be packed into a first aid kit but these are starting to disappear from our family bathroom cabinet - I don't think I've ever bought TCP in my adult life!

New research by Vidisan, a natural eye drop to relieve sore and irritated eyes for the whole family, reveals that over a quarter (28%) of Brits no longer own any sort of first aid kit, even if it's just an assortment of products on a bathroom shelf. For those who do have one, only 25% keep eye drops as part of their equipment, despite eye irritation being a common and distressing complaint for both children and parents.

The research, conducted with 1,000 British respondents, shows that most just keep a bandage or plaster (84%) and a painkiller (76%) among their core healthcare products. A third (38.5%) kept a hay fever remedy, antihistamines or cream in their kit but they did forget to include eye drops, which are often needed in addition to antihistamines, especially in summer months.

Scarily, 14% of those with a first aid kit said they usually had a partly-used prescription medicine in it which was past its expiration date.

When asked which items they thought were most important to keep in their first aid kit at all times, two-thirds (66%) said bandages and plasters; 59% said painkillers; 47% said antiseptic cream; and only 23% thought of eye wash and just 7% eye drops.

The lack of presence of eye drops in a first aid kit is surprising given that over a third of men in the research complained of foreign bodies entering their eyes whilst gardening, reporting discomfort (37%). A similar number of women also suffered from this - 30%.

Again, when playing sport, 30% of men said they had recently got something in their eye yet only 58% of them used an eye drop compared to 65% of women.

As well as outdoor hobbies, being on holiday also poses a risk to eye comfort. Nearly half (48%) of those questioned had experienced problems on the beach with the wind blowing sand in their eyes, and 70% of the group admitted to giving up and going home due to the problem. Going swimming can also be a problem. 45% said that they suffered eye irritation after swimming in chlorine filled waters.

For many people this eye irritation can mean burning, swollen, red, sore or even weeping eyes. By being prepared and having an eye drop means that this needn't ruin your whole day. Nowadays there are very effective eye drop solutions especially designed for such occasions.

Vidisan is an eye drop by leading eye care specialists Bausch + Lomb. Not only can it soothe and help relieve irritated eyes but it uniquely contains a special lubricant called Povidone and can be used at any age so it is suitable for the whole family. It is proven to calm irritated eyes from daily causes such as wind, dust, pollution, cold, cigarette smoke, chlorine and pollen. It's a year round solution.

As well as the Povidone, it also contains euphrasia. This combination is formulated to improve the stability of the tear film (the watery layer on the surface of the eye) and give immediate relief from stinging and burning after the first application.

Vidisan is available in a single 10ml dose bottle (£4.50) or 30, 0.6ml doses (£6.99). It can be used by contact lens wearers but the lenses must be removed first, then they can be replaced after 15 minutes. Once opened, the 10ml bottle should be discarded after 6 weeks.

Bausch + Lomb have offered my readers the chance to win some eye drops for their own first aid kit. All you have to do is fill in the Gleam widget below. Good luck! T&C's can be found in the widget.

British Red Cross: Baby & Child First Aid App #RappedUp

Before I had children, I was quite a worrier. Then when C was born, this increased tenfold and my anxiety shot through the roof. This tiny person would rely on me for every little thing that they needed. What if I couldn't protect him or something happened that was out of my control? When he was around 10 months old, we were in the throes of weaning and he was having finger foods. I remember he got a piece of food lodged in his throat. This made me panic, which scared him, but luckily his daddy had done a First Aid course and he knew what to do. The whole ordeal was probably only a few seconds long but it felt like a lifetime and tears were streaming down my face. I was so lucky that he was at home that day and knew what to do. I couldn't believe that I had failed to learn such an essential life skill that all parents should definitely know.

There are approximately 3,600,000 parents of under 5's in the UK. Parents usually feel the need to learn First Aid in their last trimester of pregnancy up until their child is 8 months old. Around two thirds of parents would like more information of First Aid and it is one of the top skills that parents say they wish they'd learned before having children.

The British Red Cross have made it really easy for all parents to learn the importance of First Aid skills specifically for babies and children through their free app. In addition to this, you can also attend First Aid courses throughout the UK. These are great for parents of children aged between 0-12 years or you can learn online too. It's so simple so there is no reason that parents shouldn't know this lifesaving advice.

The British Red Cross app is completely free (you can download it from the App Store and Google Play Store) and it already has positive reviews and a four star rating on the Apple App Store. It covers absolutely everything; anything that you can think of and I can't believe I have done without the app for so long.

Upon opening the app, you are advised to tap the middle button labelled 'Emergency' if you find yourself in an emergency situation. This will bring up a list of possible scenarios and you choose which emergency you are in. Once you have found your topic, it gives advice on what to do and in what order, it even has videos for more effective help.

The app also helps you learn what to do in certain scenarios and how to prepare for things like hot weather, travelling and lots of other occasions. It can run a test to check how well you are absorbing the information that you're learning from the app and lastly, you can update your child or children's records so you have a handy note of their medications and allergies. One of my favourite things was in the 'Prepare' section, where there is an improvised First Aid Kit. It tells you about things that you have around the home that will work well in a crisis such as using a credit card or library card to remove a bee sting or using beer, juice or milk to cool burns. There is so much information packed into this totally free app and it is definitely an essential for all parents.

NatraSan First Aid Spray - Review & Giveaway

As a busy mum of two I know all to well the daily life of a child. My almost 3 year old is pretty clumsy and is forever falling over his own feet. My ten month old cruiser is always falling over as she learns how to use her feet and her crawling means everything goes on the floor and in her mouth.

We were given a bottle of NatraSan to try out. At first I thought it was only to use on cuts and scrapes but it is so much more than that!

Uses of NatraSan include:

  • Preventing infections in cuts and wounds
  • Using as a skin care product to reduce acne and spots
  • Controlling the fungus that Athlete's Foot and fungal nail and skin conditions cause
  • Nappy rash
  • Mosquito and insect bites
  • Minor burns
  • As mouthwash
  • As a disinfectant to sanitise all hard and soft surfaces such as baby toys, highchairs and dummies
  • Deodorising shoes and soft furnishings
I was a little blown away when I first read the list of uses. How can that be? NatraSan is pH neutral so it won't sting, it's safe around your eyes and mouth, it's safe for your skin and claims to be more effective than the best branded disinfectants. NatraSan is so good because it contains hypoclorous acid. This is a mild but effective antiseptic that is produced by the human body to kill germs. Many other products on the market claim to get rid of 99.9% of bacteria. NatraSan kills 99.9999% meaning that for every million bacteria, only one isn't killed compared to the 1000 that others leave.

NatraSan is really easy to use due to its spray nozzle. We have had a toddler accident where C was left with a cut knee. I told him it was just water and he was fine with me spraying it on. There is no chemical smell so it could definitely just pass as water! He didn't flinch or whinge at all so I'm guessing the "no sting" claim is correct. We have also been using it to clean the kids highchairs tray and it has given us peace of mind that E can eat her food off of it without coming into contact with any of this nasty bacteria.

The usages for NatraSan are pretty amazing and I honestly believe that it should be a staple in everyone's medicine cabinet. A 250ml bottle of NatraSan retails at £10 or you can pick up a Travel Buddy (100ml) for £7.

If you, like me, think NatraSan sounds great, here's your chance to win one! All you have to do is fill in the Rafflecopter widget below.
