Story Time with Miffy - Review & Giveaway

I remember the Miffy books by Dick Bruna being one of the first ones my dad read to me back in the early Nineties. Over 20 years later and my own children absolutely love the sweet little bunny. They were first aware of her by watching Miffy's Adventures Big and Small on Tiny Pop then we got toys and books. She was an instant hit in house!

Being a Miffy Mum, we received a lovely little duo of books to read recently. My favourite time of day is reading to my children at bedtime and they were delighted to have some new Miffy books to read.

Firstly, we received a really cute Miffy shaped board book called 'Miffy's Word Book'. My first thought was that it would be perfect for younger children. With it's colourful pictures and words, two year old E certainly loved learning what each image was, but my four year old son is starting to independently read so he found himself sounding out each word without looking at the picture for help. From Miffy's favourite things to the names of Miffy's friends, it makes for a wonderful learning book for little ones.

Next up was one that brought me back to my childhood. The style of the Miffy books haven't changed and this story about Miffy and her friend Melanie is very sweet. Miffy has a pen friend who comes to visit and the story follows them meeting up, activities that they do and the fun that they have together. I've written briefly before that we are waiting on an autism assessment for our son C and one of the things that has been recommended for him are books on making friends. Although this isn't specifically about making friends, it's a good one to teach him about acceptable behaviours and emotions.

Miffy's Word Book retails at £6.00 and Miffy and Melanie retails at £5.00. Both can be purchased from the Miffy Shop. You can also keep up to date with Miffy on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Miffy Merchandise - Snowglobe

I have always been a massive fan of Miffy ever since I was a little girl and I have since introduced her to my own children who love her just as much. They fell in love with the books then discovered Miffy's Adventures Big & Small on Tiny Pop.

E was so excited to receive a cute little Miffy snowglobe in the post last week. It is super tiny but perfect for her little hands. Really, I wouldn't recommend a two year old plays with it but she knows that she has to be careful with it and only shakes it gently to see the snowflakes fall around the little Miffy figure inside the glass. I love snowglobes myself and actually keep a zombie Halloween one in my kitchen all year round so she knew what it did straight away.

The detailing is amazing for such a small item and E loves pointing out all the stars, teddy and Miffy herself. She's claimed it as a decoration in her bedroom already.

Miffy toys have actually been released at selected Debenhams stores so you will be able to pick up your own character figurines and miniature talking toys on the high street. The sensory Miffy can also be found there which I definitely recommend. E has one and absolutely loves it!

For more information on which stores you can find Miffy in, check out the Miffy blog.

To keep up with all things Miffy, you can follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Planting Miffy Tulips for Spring

The children and I absolutely love Miffy so we were really excited to hear that after 15 years of cross-fertilisation and patient cultivation, Dutch tulip breeders have finally produced a variety to represent the Netherlands' most famous children's character.

The Miffy tulip is deep red in colour and it is a perfect match to the shade that Dutch illustrator Dick Bruna used in the much loved storybooks over 60 years ago. The cultivation process started in 2001 when tulip breeder Ligthart Bloembollen cross-fertilised two varieties to achieve the right shade and form required, then it was a question of waiting for vegetative reproduction to take place.

By 2014, Ligthart had created a cultivated area of 50m² at which point the company sold the variety under a code name to a company called Pennings de Bilt in Breezand. They are now aiming to increase the area to supply enough Miffy bulbs for sale at retail in 2017/18.

Marja Kerkhof, MD of Mercis, Dick Bruna's publishing company said, "We are nearing the end of a long, special journey working with some of our country's most talented tulip growers to produce the special Miffy tulip. I am looking forward to the moment when the variety is on sale to the general public, which hopefully will be next year."

This year, there are only 2,500 Miffy bulbs in existence and we were really lucky to receive a pack of five bulbs to plant ourselves! We don't have a proper garden with grass so the children don't really have a lot of gardening experience, although C does like watering the flowers at preschool when he needs a little break from the noise levels indoors. Luckily, we didn't need a grass area to plant these and we decided to use little pots instead.

Both children had so much fun getting messy with the soil, popping their tulip bulbs in and topping with more soil. C has been a little impatient and keeps asking if they've grown yet! They both are enjoying taking care of their little plants and making sure that they are watered daily. I will be sharing their changes over my social media accounts so please keep an eye out - I'm so excited!

We received a copy of the Miffy's Garden book too which I think is getting them even more excited. I think they've caught the bug now and we will definitely be making sure we plant some more bulbs of different varieties.

Some of the 2,500 Miffy bulbs have been planted in the world famous Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands. It will be open from March 23rd until May 21st 2017 and you will be able to see them growing in the Keukenhof's Walk of Fame and also in the Miffy garden located in the park.

Miffy & Bliss for World Prematurity Day

Everyone will recognise Dick Bruna's beloved white bunny character, Miffy. For World Prematurity Day, they are launching a new comfort blanket including the cute character in order to raise funds for Bliss, the national premature baby charity. Bliss offered support to myself and my partner when C was born prematurely so this is very close to my heart.

Soft toys are not allowed in ICU incubators so nurses encourage mums who cannot cuddle their babies to use comfort blankets to transfer their natural scent. The Miffy comfort blanket is packaged in a luxury gift box and is made from soft white velour and has satin edging, making a beautiful gift for any newborn.

The Miffy Comfort Blankets go on sale tomorrow, the 17th of November, from www.miffybliss.com and they retail at £14.99 with £3.50 of that going straight to Bliss.
